The University City Lions went head to head, ending in a loss with the Clayton Greyhounds at their homecoming game .
To start the big event, the University City Marching Lions took the field and played the national anthem led by Drum Major Terrance Childs, senior. As they played, Commander Tiffany Riggins. senior, directed the color guard in the presentation of the colors. The football Lions showed their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and wore pink Under Armour, socks and gloves for the Breast Cancer awareness week. Before the game started, the two teams had a period of stretching and last-minute words.
The game began with the kick off of the ball from Clayton to U City. During the first quarter, the two teams were neck and neck. They were up and down the field, back and forward stopping one another hard from entering their end zone. They headed into the second quarter, and a tackle was missed, allowing Clayton to land a 53-yard touch down on a five-yard pass. It was the first touchdown of the game. The Lions were not completely on their feet yet.
U. City began to come back in the third quarter and stand their ground and quickly tied the game, 7-7. However, they fell behind once again on a missed short pass. As well as getting hit hard with penalties and U. City without some of their starters.
Late in the game, the Lions got a turnover and came back with a score on a thirty nine yard pass from senior Sam Brown to Justin Willis. It was too late as the last seconds drained off the clock it was over. The engraved score was 21-14. The band played their last tune and exited the stadium.
“What a game,” students and other fans commented as they exited the stadium. As the Lions returned to their locker room, Clayton boarded the buses and departed.
Leaving the stadium, Head Coach Battle said that Clayton wasn’t a very good team.
“But, hey they beat us,” he said. “This was our first homecoming lost in four years .”
