Ms. Pezzola’s sociology class is doing an exhibit on landmark social movements by using the seminal events spanning Seneca Falls, and Selma to Stonewall mentioned in President Obama’s inaugural speech.
Ms. Claunch’s drawing students are working with artist Maria Ojascastro to create an altered book. Students visited the Millstone Gallery at COCA Jan. 25 to meet Ms. O. along with artists, Connie Swimson and Sarah Swinson whose work is currently on display. All of these artists use art to journal and as a form of healing. The drawing students are thoroughly enjoying creating these books, which will be on display at COCA. The opening reception is Thurs., Feb. 21, from 4-6 pm.
The Culinary Arts classes are using the greenhouse to grow 8 different herbs and 5 different lettuce types which they will use in their labs. Each “kitchen” has a pot of herbs and lettuce which are starting to bud.
Students in Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) are volunteering for St. Louis Effort for Aids.
Journalism students are preparing to attend the spring conference of SSP (Sponsors of School Publications) at Webster University where Mary Beth Tinker will be the keynote speaker. Tinker v. Des Moines resulted in a decision by the United States Supreme Court that defined the constitutional rights of students in U.S. public schools. The “Tinker test” is still used by courts today to determine whether a school’s disciplinary actions violate students’ First Amendment rights.
Deja Bowie, junior, has been selected to receive the “Distinguished Achievement for Excellence in Science Award” from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. This award, established by the UMSL College of Arts & Sciences, recognizes the most outstanding junior-level science students enrolled in the greater St. Louis metro area high schools.
