Many students are outraged at the new tardy policy which took effect at the beginning of second semester. This policy requires those students who are late to serve an hour of after school detention. If a student doesn’t serve a detention then an in school suspension (ISS) is assigned.
Previously, a 30 minute after school detention was assigned for each tardy. If a student did not serve the 30 minute detention, it was increased to an hour. Failure to serve the hour long detention resulted in Saturday school; failing to serve Saturday school resulted in a 2-day out of school suspension.
“I think ISS is very stupid and pointless because students are going to be late anyway and putting them in ISS is taking them away from their learning,” said junior Madia Weedee.
Administration thought that this would be the best way to help with the low attendance rate.
“Drastic measures are required because attendance is off the chain,” said science teacher Ms. Conner. “Some students think that they can show whenever they want and if it was a job they wouldn’t have one.”
According to Mr. Carter, assistant principal, attendance affects grades regardless. Some students do not get their work for ISS and therefore they sit there and get further behind in their classes.
