The girls’ volleyball team, five algebra classes and the Stapleton-Cloud household all depend on one guy: Mr. Kevin Stapleton-Cloud. Sometimes all of those responsibilities can be a hard thing to balance.
“Trying to find a fair balance between all three of my responsibilities is challenging,” said Stapleton-Cloud. “As a teacher I’m responsible for around 100 kids, in volleyball I’m responsible for 25 and at home I’m responsible for three.”
Stapleton-Cloud has been a volleyball coach for 12 years and stepped down from the head coach position twice—once in 2004 and again in 2008. In 2013, he regained the position.
“I think I would retire from being a coach before I did teaching,” said Stapleton-Cloud. “Teaching is my profession while coaching is a nice little add-on to what I’ve been doing, but I’ve gotten into education because I love teaching. Math first.”
The girls’ volleyball captain, junior Kanesha Jenkins, has Stapleton-Cloud as a teacher as well. She notices the difference between Coach Cloud and Mr. Stapleton-Cloud.
“Cloud is way different from when he’s being my coach to when he’s being my teacher,” said Jenkins. “When he’s a teacher he’s really serious in class. He gets mad at me when I talk and don’t pay attention just like a regular teacher but once we are in practice, he pretty much lets me do or say whatever I want.”
Sophomore Tanyra Blackmon, who has never had Cloud as teacher but plays volleyball, praised him for keeping all of his responsibilities in order.
“I think Cloud is a very good teacher, he doesn’t seem too hard,” said Blackmon. “Hopefully I’ll be able to have him as my teacher before I graduate. As a coach he is really nicer than I thought he would be since this is my first year playing. He makes sure we all are doing what we need to but still having fun.”
Although Cloud is a very busy man, he doesn’t act very stressed about it.
“Juggling all three keeps me on my toes and makes me more cognizant of my responsibilities,” said Cloud.
