“Gay is not a synonym for stupid,” says one of the posters in the halls of U. City. This isn’t only on a poster but also it’s one of the most important statements the Gay Straight Alliance advocates for.
“GSA existed a couple of years ago and I just started it back up again because it went away for a while,” said Mr. Calloway, English Teacher and GSA sponsor. “We started GSA back up because there’s so many people who are against people that are gay in the society and things aren’t getting better they are actually getting worse,” said Calloway.
GSA is helping students and also faculty learn about tolerance and acceptance of people that are gay.
“I’ve heard that people have noticed our posters and people are taking notice that we are trying to change the way people act towards homosexuality,” said junior Tamie Tillman.
In addition GSA is trying to get the word out that being gay is not a crime. The club also would like to encourage more people to attend the meetings and try to get a better understanding of their mission.
Tillman thinks that people who are gay are ashamed or afraid to come to the GSA meetings and people who are straight are more excited to come and attend the meetings.
The club actually benefits some people in ways that you wouldn’t even think.
“GSA helped me learn more about gay culture and I also have more gay friends, said Dana Shelton. “Coming to the meetings also helps me meet more people.”
So how does GSA respond to people who oppose the organization?
“We just try to come up with different strategies like making posters, trying to get people to come to the meetings, getting people to also come to the club fair and putting together different activities,” said Mr.Calloway.
