On November 20th, 50 people went to the U. City fire station off of Delmar to help fight hunger in the community. With some of the volunteers showing up at 8 a.m., the day was off to a bang. Cars full of food started to pull up almost immediately and everyone got straight to work.
“I think it will turn out well,” said sophomore Doug McCray. “It will be good for the community and for the families during the holidays.”
With the help of the local boy scouts and some volunteers from UMSL, the student group boxed over 10,000 cans- around 550 boxes of food. However, it was not easy: some people stayed until 4 p.m. boxing and moving the crates into the truck to be sent off.
“We got a lot of food,” said junior Joe Egan. “I was really impressed by the amount of generosity.”
The fire department even helped during their off time, constructing more boxes and helping the kids lift food onto the truck.
“It was chaos; I could barley keep everyone and everything on track and working,” says Mr.Coley, leader of the Boy Scouts.
Some of the helpers this year came from UMSL. They were very excited to help, bringing a new spirit to the old tradition.
