Long ago, in the Greek land of Troy lived a fifteen-year-old prince, Ganymede. Many would agree that Ganymede was the most handsome young man in all of Troy. In fact, Ganymede was so attractive that even Zeus, the father of the gods, thought that he was so irresistible that he wanted Ganymede all to himself.

Keep in mind that back in ancient Greece it was actually a social norm for older men to take in boys, anywhere from twelve-years-old to nineteen-years-old, as a lover.

One day while Ganymede was on Mount Ida tending to his father’s sheep, Zeus took the form of a giant eagle, flew down, picked Ganymede up in his talons, and flew him off to Mount Olympus. Zeus didn’t only want Ganymede as a lover, but he also wanted the teenager to serve him as his own personal cup bearer to bring him a drink of water or wine whenever he wanted.

In exchange for taking Ganymede, Zeus gave the prince’s father a herd of the finest horses to grace Mount Ida.

Aquarius is known as being the zodiac sign most likely to rebel, and that is exactly what Ganymede did. He was fed up with being Zeus’ slave, so he angrily poured the cup of water out of Mount Olympus. Ganymede’s action didn’t only make it rain for days, but it also flooded the entire Earth.

Zeus was furious with Ganymede for disobeying him, and his first thought was to punish the young boy, but then Zeus realized that he wasn’t being very nice to Ganymede. To make up for how rude he was, Zeus used his godly powers to make Ganymede immortal as the constellation of the water bearer, which is the symbol for Aquarius.
