When in uniform, Jerron Carrico, sophomore, describes himself as “assertive, motivated, and committed.”
Since the age of seven, Carrico has been fascinated by all things militaristic. Whether it be spending time with veterans, playing war games, or reading Tom Clancy novels, when given the opportunity he immerses himself in the subject of combat.
“Anything involving military science intrigues me,” said Carrico. “I feel as if I was born to be a part of it in some way.”
“Jerron is very bright and knowledgeable about the military,” said Ms. Aboussie, social studies teacher. “He knows a lot about international conflicts, and he’s always a great source in the classroom.”
Before the start of his eighth grade year, Carrico was already looking forward to enrolling into Air Force JROTC his freshmen year. “I was excited when I heard about the program,” said Carrico. “I figured I would get a lot from it, so I wanted to join as soon as possible.”
Now in high school, Carrico’s goal is to do well on the ASVAB (Armed Services Aptitude Battery) Test. “Although not a mandatory test, it is extremely important in determining my future and where I will be in the military someday,” said Carrico. “My main goal is to excel in all my classes, so that I can get into a top military institution.”
Besides taking courses in Taekwondo and Mandarin Chinese, Carrico also plays both baseball and ice hockey. “I try to diversify my activities,” said Carrico. “But for the most part they prepare me for military training.”
While unsure of exactly which branch of military he wants to join, Carrico is strongly considering entering the Marine Corps, where he expects to rapidly ascend the ranks. “If I go to the Marines, I want to be a part of the Special Operations Forces,” said Carrico. “Being in Special Operations would fulfill a long term goal of mine to help protect my country and fellow citizens.”
